3D Embroidery
What do you do when you want something that sticks out so much more than every other piece of embroidery that you see? Why, you use 3D embroidery.
Sticking out isn't just a good selling point - it's also quite literal! With 3D Embroidery, your design, logo or monogram comes alive, jumping off the fabric and really getting in your face.
When it comes down to it, there's basically two types of 3D embroidery. The first is Puff Embroidery, and the second is Layered Embroidery.
The 3D Embroidery that springs to mind for most people is Puff Embroidery. This produces the amazing looks that you see on caps, bags and hats - often thick, rounded letters in bold colours. This effect is brilliant, and can produce a lasting impression - there's just something about having a design you can feel as well as see that will stick in someones head!
Puff Embroidery is really quite simple when you come down to the basics. Firstly, a base stitch or outline is established, and the machine is stopped. A layer of foam, with thickness depending on your specifications, is placed on top of the fabric. The machine is then restarted at a slower speed with a higher stitch count, and the foam is perforated by the needle and held in place with the thread.
When the entire design is complete, then the foam that is not covered by thread is simply lifted away and pulled off the fabric. Any parts of foam that are sticking out from between stitches are either pushed in or shrunk back with a heat gun or similar.
The end result: A truly spectacular design!
A second, lesser known technique, but not any less fabulous, is Layered Embroidery. This technique is achieved with the layering of stitches.
When you layer the stitches on a design, the difference in height of the fabric and the stitch is increased, resulting in a raised stitch and a normal height fabric. This effect is more subtle than a Puff Embroidery, but still produces beautiful results. This is far more suited to detailed designs than Puff Embroidery, simply due to the lack of restrictions that would otherwise be present with Puff Embroidery foams.
Both of these techniques can produce really exquisite designs. The results are certainly eye catching, and have the ability to take your design out of the realm of ordinary and into the region of brilliance.
