Appliqué
Applique is one of those simple things that can add many layers of dimension to a design. Want something that will last, draw eyes to your designs and cost effective? Well, you've found the right thing: applique.
The thing that instantly springs to mind for almost everyone when you say the word applique is a quilt. Big, soft and warm, with intricate layers of materials - perfect for the long, cold nights in front of the fire or television - and often as a birthday gift from a grandmother!
However, applique is not just restricted to quilts. Really, if you can put a needle through it, you can applique it - it's that simple. Whether it's thick canvas, a nice soft felt or a very thing polyester base, it can be appliqued.
Applique has an interesting origin - it is thought that it was first used in Africa, around the 18th century, and was much simpler than it is now, in that they would be using bone, wooden or stone needles, and simple fabrics such as animal hides or beaten bark. Though the origin of the technique is generally attributed to Africans, the word itself, 'applique', is derived from a French word, which means 'that has been applied' - very fitting! Today the art is much more sophisticated - and with such a large time to improve, you would expect it to be!
Today, all sorts of fabrics can be used, from leather to synthetics, onto a myriad of base fabrics or materials. To that, you can add the huge array of threads that can be used to stitch the applique to the base fabric, and further expand the range of designs that you can achieve. With a combination of all three, then there truly is no limit to the designs you can create.
