Dye Sublimation

BBDye sublimation is quite an amazing process. It differs greatly from most other printing techniques, and provides simply beautiful results. In the most basic terms, ink is changed from a gaseous form, which permeates the fabric and bonds to the fibers of the material.

The applications of dye sublimation are spread far and wide. Below is a short list of things that you could use dye sublimation for:
  • Banners
  • Flags
  • Bike Uniforms
  • Team Uniforms
  • Jackets
  • Table Covers
  • Wrap-around Coverings
  • Awnings
  • Ceramics
  • Woods
  • Metals
  • T-Shirts

With the exception of wood, metals and ceramic tiles, all of the above can be sublimed right onto the fabric, as long as the fabric is synthetic (polyester or similar). When subliming onto metals, ceramics and woods, you must have a coating which enables the dye to permeate and lock into the surface. Otherwise, the dye will not penetrate and will not become permanent.

The dyes are applied at around 120 degrees Celcius and at a relatively high pressure. It is the combination of these two situations that causes the dye to sublime (go from solid ink to gas whilst skipping the liquid phase) and enter the fabric. Once the ink has permeated the fabric, it undergoes a process called deposition, which can also be known as desublimation (the reverse of sublimation, it occurs when a gas changes into the solid state). It is this final step, deposition, which locks the ink into the fabric, creating a permanent colour which will not fade even through washing.

Another great thing about dye sublimation is the lack of a setup cost. This means that it is a very cost effective technique, which makes allowances for people wanting to do single prints or very low quantities. Pricing is the same for one colour as it would be for multiple colours, so why not go with a full colour design and amaze people with the vibrancy of your print. Cost does vary by size, and prints can be up to 2.4m by 1.2m in size.
