Standard Embroidery
Any embroidery that doesn't employ any specialised techniques or materials is simply called standard embroidery. However, the simple name hides the truth of the complexities in design and the myriad of choices available with this style of embroidery.
Thread for this specific type of embroidery is available in several weights, mainly No. 40 Weight and No. 60 Weight. The standard thread for embroidery is No. 40 Weight thread, whilst No. 60 Weight thread is much finer, which allows for greater detail, closer stitching and more intricate designs. However, along with No.'s 40 and 60 Weight threads, there also 30 and 12 Weight threads available.
In general, there are two types of threads for Standard Embroidery - Classic Rayon and Polyneon. Both of these threads are manufactured by Maderia, who produce the highest quality threads available. We only use threads by Maderia to ensure the best quality, durability and value for our customers.
Classic Rayon thread, as the name suggests, is made from a Rayon material. Rayon is a cellulose fibre, which is neither truely synthetic or a natural fibre. This thread has a very high luster quality to it, which gives a very bright sheen.
Polyneon thread is very different to the Classic Rayon thread, and is made completely of polyester. This means that it has incredible strength, which translates to a longer lasting design for you. It comes in No's. 40 and 60 Weight threads, and has superb colour retention properties, wich basically means that your designs will last for a long time, and look good however old they are. This thread is also colourfast to stonewashing processes, which makes it an ideal thread for garments which may be subject to harsh environments.
